What's in a name?

Brainchild is an outgrowth of over thirty years of practice in which Dr. Richard Ivy and Dr. Stephanie Mounger have developed an integrated system that challenges the concept that our brains are hard-wired. As neuroplasticians( a fancy way to say that these doctors subscribe to the theory that our brains have the "plastic" ability to, change, adapt and rewire themselves for optimum growth and development) these doctors have discovered that unlike machines or computers our brains have enormous capacity for adaptation.

What We Do...

We identify and verify labels.

Labels matter because  they do not just express our thoughts, they can limit and shape our perceptions as well. Labels not only have the ability to draw our attention to truths we might otherwise have missed, but they can also hide important facts we might arbitrarily have seen. Labels can affect the way we look at people, and what we see in people when we examine them. Labels sometimes mislead us into viewing the label as the reality and the person or child as the abstraction. This is an error in judgment at the least and a life-long obstacle at times. At Brainchild, we strive to stay away from mistaking the label for the child, while realizing even accurate labels tell only a part of the story.

As you will discover at Brainchild Labs, a true understanding of a child's learning challenges---and what to do about them ---generally always requires a complete assessment of a child's learning weaknesses and strengths, most often including an MRI or CT scan, which can give an exact picture of the brains makeup, taking much of the guesswork out of the diagnosis. Our assessment and dagnostic approach, combined with an MRI, can prevent some children from going years in the system with the same diagnostic label when they clearly have different strengths, weaknesses, temperament and life experiences as well as unique personality traits. With the correct therapy and balance of the right and left hemispheres the brain will change.

Our View of the Brain

At Brainchild Labs, we view people with a learning challenge as simply people in need of further learning and development---not diseased or disordered. In the age-old struggle between nature and nurture, nature currently dominates the battle for "expert opinion, " discounting the brain's incredible ability to change. Brainchild embodies the growing body of evidence that neuroplasticity (the brain's ability to change and rewire itself)exists and through the use of targeted activities and experiences proves successful in 100% of the cases that we accept.

By harnessing what we know about the brain's ability to change and rewire itself , Brainchild Labs has proven that most children currently identified as "learning-disabled" are literally wired to learn differently than most other children. At our labs, we have different routes of informationintake, different techniques for storing and processing information, different formats for expressing information, and incredible resourcefulness. In most cases these differences need never become disabling----unless we allow them.

Through BrainchildLabs unique approach you will be empowered not only to detect a wide range of differences in learning styles and approaches, but also to meet many of the special needs that arise from these differences. These strategies and skill building exercises will also help you as a parent to meet the needs of an individual who processes information in ways different from most other individuals so that each unique person can learn and work to the best of his or her abilities, capitalizing on right and left brain activitiea to optimize the brain's full potential.
